When and why was
Seabird Enterprises, Inc. established?
Seabird was organized in 1983 to provide opportunities to students and
adults with mental retardation and/or developmental disabilities in our
community.
Is Seabird an
accredited agency?
Seabird Enterprises, Inc. holds the highest accreditation offered by the
Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.
Where do the
students and adults reside?
Individuals reside in the communities of: Groton, Stonington, East Lyme,
Montville, Norwich, Canterbury, Putnam, Colchester, Bozrah, East Hampton,
and Salem.
Does Seabird have
programs for people who use a wheelchair?
Yes, people who use wheelchairs work at some of the sites. Seabird staff
meet with the individual and their family to determine what work sites would
be available.
Does Seabird have
programs for people who use sign language?
Yes, people who use sign language work at Seabird sites. Seabird staff meets
with the individual and their family to determine what sites would be
available.
What age are the
individuals who attend Seabird programs?
Students begin as early as age 15 years. The Day Service Options
participants are over 55 years of age.
What are the wages?
Students earn a training rate of 50% of the current minimum wage to start.
Adult earnings are based on the Department of Labor standards for quantity
and quality. A performance review is used twice a year to determine the
person’s hourly wage.
What are the
benefits?
Adults earn five paid vacation days and six paid holidays. If the individual
were employed by a community business such as a grocery store, the wages and
benefits would be based on what is available at the business.
How do the
participants get back and forth to the work sites?
Transportation is usually provided by the school for students. Some schools
utilize Seabird vehicles for transporting to and from the work site.
Transportation for adults is determined by a meeting with the individual's
team.
What if a
participant needs to have a medication during the workday?
The individual must be “self-medicating” unless special arrangements
have been made.
How does someone
change his or her job site?
Because Seabird offers a variety of job sites, an individual can request a
different one. They would notify their Job Coach.
Who do I call when
I am going to be absent from work?
When you want to report that you will be absent, call the Main Office at
(860) 446-0882.
Does someone from
Seabird attend my meetings?
Yes, your Job Coach and/or one of the agency’s Coordinators will attend
your meeting.
Is there a work
schedule calendar available?
Yes, a calendar is available by calling the Seabird Main Office at (860)
446-0882. Students usually follow the work schedule from their school
calendar.
How do I find out
more about Seabird's Annual High School Recognition breakfast?
The 13th Annual Breakfast was held on June 2, 1999. High school graduates
were honored from the school districts of Montville, Waterford, Groton,
Colchester, East Lyme, North Stonington, New London, and Lebanon. Also
recognized were a group of adults who have participated with Seabird for 15
years. The guest speaker was Commissioner Peter O’Meara State of
Connecticut Department of Mental Retardation. The 14th Annual Breakfast will
be held the first week in June 2000. Any parent, who would like to attend
the breakfast, and learn about our programs, should make a reservation by
calling the Seabird office at (860) 446-0882.
