Agricultural Programs
The opportunities in agriculture include the Crocker Hill Garden & Gift Shop located in Franklin, CT, the Riverview Farm & Greenhouse located in Uncasville, CT and several other community job sites.

Students and adults will benefit from these programs by performing valuable work, developing friendships and social skills, and participating in their community. The programs provide training in the areas of horticulture, animal care, crafts, barn and farm maintenance and horse care. Some skills that are taught include:

  • Transplanting & potting plants
  • Labeling & Identifying plants
  • Watering plants
  • Preparing outdoor beds for planting
  • Harvesting flowers and vegetables
  • Harvesting and drying seeds
  • Weeding
  • Maintenance of the store
  • Waiting on customers
  • Use of a cash register
  • Stocking & restocking shelves
  • Making dog biscuits
  • Using an oven
  • Feeding & watering various animals (pigs, cows, horses, chickens, rabbits, etc.)
  • Cleaning & maintaining the barn and outside areas
  • Properly leading a horse or other livestock
  • Proper grooming techniques
  • Horsemanship and horse handling
  • Care and maintenance of horse tack and equipment
  • Proper cleaning of a stall or other livestock pens

This program provides the opportunity for students and adults with unique needs to work flexible, part time hours. Individuals eat lunch in the community with their Job Coach at least once per week. Other activities include visits to businesses in the community that are related to their training and recreational activities.
