Food Service Opportunities
Candy’s Cozy Kitchen, Puffins Restaurant, and Seabird Bakers Too
are small businesses owned and operated by Seabird Enterprises. The
programs are open Monday through Friday for breakfast and lunch and the
sale of baked goods and restaurant food. Each site employs adults funded
by the Department of Mental Retardation and other agencies as well as
high school students with special needs. Skills taught include baking,
cooking, cleaning, food preparation, cash register skills and waiting on
customers. Additional activities include grocery shopping, lunch and
breaks in the community.
Candy’s Cozy Kitchen
Candy’s Cozy Kitchen added new equipment this year to enlarge their
menu and create more opportunities for those who attend program there.
Breakfast items include fresh baked muffins using fruits from local
markets, croissants and bagels served in a cheery atmosphere from a
bright kitchen. The lunch menu is varied including Mexican specialties
such as chimichangas and quesadillas. Freshly roasted beef, turkey or
hams become the base for creative lunch sandwiches or filled breads
served daily. Many skills are taught from baking to customer service.
Seabird Bakers Too
Now newly redecorated, Seabird Bakers Too starts the mornings off with
fresh baked muffins—Morning Glory, blueberry, pumpkin and others.
Lunch follows with made to order deli sandwiches on bakery baked bread
or rolls and fresh made soups like cream of broccoli, turkey vegetable
or clam chowder. New items include fresh made loaves of bread such as
herb, potato or egg flavored. Many types of cookies are baked each week
including White Chocolate Chunk, Oatmeal Raisin, Peanut Butter and of
course, the local favorite, Monster Cookies.
Puffins Restaurant
Opened in the summer of 1999, Puffins Restaurant is a full service
waterfront restaurant specializing in seafood located in Groton, CT.
Skill teaching includes customer service such as food and beverage
serving, bussing tables and host/hostessing, as well as food prep and
restaurant maintenance. Workers and students get the experience needed
to enable them to obtain a job in a restaurant in the community.
Puffins’ menu specializes in ocean fresh seafood entrees, delicious
salads and overstuffed sandwiches prepared and served by Seabird
workers. Puffins and Seabird's other small businesses provide the
setting for individuals with disabilities to learn the necessary skills
they need to succeed in the food service field.
