Individual Placement Opportunities
“Sophisticated yet Accessible”

The Seabird Individual Placement program has successfully placed individuals into independent jobs in the community since 1985. Employment Specialists are Job Coaches who receive specialized training in the areas of job development, marketing, assessment, and job based instruction. The Employment Specialist will help individuals with disabilities learn how to do the work and retain the job.

One of the roles of the Employment Specialist is to help the individual focus on his or her interests and talents and match them to job possibilities. The Employment Specialist and the individual go out together to find a job by looking in the want ads, using Connecticut Job Service and other various sources. Individuals in our program apply and interview for jobs just as anyone else would. If an employer thinks that they might want to hire an individual from our agency, the Employment Specialist will then actually come into the employer’s place of business and assess if the job is appropriate for the candidate. This assures a good job match for both the individual and the employer.

What happens after an employer decides to hire an individual from our agency? The Employment Specialist assists in the training by reinforcing the employer’s initial directions and explanation of policies. The Employment Specialist is there to help the individual with any obstacles in mastering the new job. When the individual feels comfortable with the job and the employer is comfortable with the worker’s performance, the Employment Specialist fades from the job site, yet comes back weekly to make sure that everything is running smoothly. If the employee is having difficulties or needs further training to learn new tasks or to refresh old duties, the Employment specialist will provide support as needed. The employer should feel free to contact the Employment Specialist at any time of the day through our beeper system.

There are many benefits to an employer from hiring an individual from our agency because our workers are motivated individuals who strive hard to produce quality work. Because of this dedication, the employer is insured a consistent employee with low absenteeism, who truly cares about his or her job.
